How to transcribe and subtitle your videos for LinkedIn

Step-by-step instructions on how to transcribe and subtitle your video using Scriptme.io and publish it to LinkedIn.

With video becoming an ever-increasingly important aspect of any brand’s identity and marketing, you probably want to share some of your video content on your LinkedIn profile. Subtitles will help improve the accessibility and reach of your videos which are important considerations in the professional space.

How to transcribe and subtitle your social media spot and publish it on LinkedIn

• To begin, log into your Scriptme.io account. In the dashboard, click the “Upload file” button to upload your video to your Scriptme.io library:

• In the upload file window, you can either drag and drop the video file from anywhere on your computer into the upload field or click “Browse file” and manually navigate to the video file using the file explorer:

• Once you’ve found and chosen the video file you want to upload, you’ll see it listed in the file upload window:

It’s important that you select the appropriate original language for the video. Under “Actions,” you can also choose to immediately transcribe the video or skip to generating subtitles. For this tutorial, we’ll transcribe the video first to show you the entire process. Click “Finish” to start uploading the video.

• Scriptme.io will keep you updated on the status of your video under the “Actions” field in your Scriptme.io dashboard:

• When the “Actions” status changes to “See transcription,” you’ll know that it has been completed successfully. When you’re ready, you can click the “See transcription” button to see your video transcription:

The Transcription dashboard is where you can preview, edit, and change the settings of your Scriptme.io video transcriptions. If you’re interested in using this feature, you can follow the in-depth guide we’ve created here.

• Next up, we will generate Subtitles from your transcription. To do this, just click the “Convert to subtitles” button:

• You’ll then need to configure basic settings for your subtitle file, such as whether you want the subtitles to span 1 or 2 lines and how many characters should display at one time:

Scriptme.io already chooses the best default settings for you. However, feel free to adjust them according to your preferences.

Scriptme.io will now process and generate the subtitles for your video. Once it’s completed, you’ll be taken to the Subtitle edit dashboard. We’ve created another step-by-step guide to help you use these features.

Aside from editing the subtitles for accuracy, you can make design changes to the subtitles as well. By switching to the “Style” tab, you’ll be able to change the font family, size, color, and styling as well as the background colour, positioning, and formatting of the text:

When exporting the video, it will look exactly like you see it in the editor.

• If you’re happy with your subtitles, you can click the “Export” button to proceed:

In the export video with subtitles window, you’ll see two separate “Export” buttons. Using the first button, you’ll embed the subtitles in the video. This means that the actual subtitle text forms part of the video and cannot be turned on/off. The second option is to generate a separate subtitle file that can be uploaded alongside your video, called “closed captions.” Using this method, viewers can turn the subtitles on/off or choose between various subtitle tracks (allowing you to offer subtitles in many different languages, for more info check this guide).

• To embed the subtitles into your video, click the first one right under the preview window to embed subtitles directly into your video:

• Scriptme.io will now start processing your video, and you can track the progress via the progress bar:

And, that’s it! You can now preview the video with embedded subtitles and download it to your computer.

Now, we’ll go  through the steps to create closed captions for your video:

• From the drop-down, make sure that you select the closed caption format of your choice. .SRT is the most commonly used format for subtitles and the only one currently supported by LinkedIn. Then, click the second “Export” button to proceed:

The .SRT file will then be downloaded to the default download folder on your computer. Confirm that you have the file saved on your computer and you can move on to uploading both your original video file along with its .SRT subtitles to LinkedIn.

How to upload your subtitled video to LinkedIn:

There are two different ways you can upload a video to LinkedIn:

1. Post it directly to your feed in the form of a post
2. Upload a video to LinkedIn homepage using the Desktop Experience app

Both procedures are very similar. We’ll go over posting a video as a post using your web browser as this is the most popular way to access LinkedIn.

How to upload your video with subtitles as a LinkedIn post:

• Log in to your LinkedIn account. From the “Start a post” panel, click on the “Video” option:

• You’ll see the “Select/Edit video” popup on your screen. Depending on which steps you followed above, you can either upload the video with embedded subtitles or the original video with the closed captions .SRT file. Regardless, using your file explorer, only find and upload the video for now.
• If you are uploading the video with embedded subtitles, you can immediately click the “Done” button to proceed with posting the video to your feed. If you want to upload closed captions, scroll down and click “Select captions.” Find the .SRT file using your file explorer. Then, click “Done” to continue to post your video:

• Finally, you can add some text to your post and then click “Post” to publish the video to your LinkedIn feed:

And, voila! You have now successfully transcribed, subtitled, and published your perfectly captioned video to your LinkedIn account! Your audience awaits.
